Swimmers Do It Better
November 3rd, 2005
In case you haven’t noticed, I haven’t written about my trip to Toronto yet. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get around to it. Life has been pretty busy and when I’m not busy, I’m too tired to do anything and when I’m not too tired to do anything, I’m in MySpace, my personal jukebox.
So what have I been doing with myself… swimming. Inspired by Michelle after I went with her one day, I started taking deep water workout classes. It was taking over my life because it was all I could do. I’d return home, collapse, and not be able to get up for two days (okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but it really was wearing me out!) and then do it all over again. I kept telling myself it would get better, that as I got stronger it wouldn’t affect me so badly. But today I decided to only stay for half the class and take it easy in the water and ignore the instructor for the most part, and lo and behold, I actually feel pretty good right now. The way you are SUPPOSED to feel later in the day after exercising. So I guess the key for me is to cut it back and go slower. In every area of my life, I am still learning…
I’ve also been taking weekly jaunts in the evening to my chiropractor so I can go with my mom and Bob. They pick me up after 5:00, we each take our turn with him, and then afterwards usually grab a bite to eat (Joey’s Only being the restaurant of choice most of the time). Then they come over and help me with little things around here like changing my bed sheets, taking out garbage, chopping carrots, and they leave with a bag of laundry that is miraculously brought back clean and folded the following week. It’s working out well and a great help to me! Although it ends up being a late night for them with the drive back to Strathmore. Mom works full time though, so it’s the only time we can all go.
Christine and I are trying to get our time in before she leaves. Last week we went to Aida’s (our favourite restaurant) for Lebanese food and PIGGED OUT on falafels and hommus and kibby and fatayer and steeha and tabbouli and Arabic coffee and OH MY GOD it was amazing. If I lived in that neighbourhood I would eat there every freaking day, I swear. After Aida’s we went to the pub for a beer. She used to work there years ago (that’s how we met) and hasn’t been back since she left. It was interesting for her to pop in and see how much she has changed and grown since then, when all the regulars she used to serve are all the same, sitting in the exact same spot with nothing new going on. I think she felt pretty good!
Tonight we are going for dinner again, we’re not sure where yet, because the place we wanted to go is booked solid. We may very well head back to Aida’s. Afterwards we are meeting her friends for cocktails at the bar she works at. She’s still working this weekend and is planning to leave on Monday, but that day keeps changing so we’ll see! There may be another dinner together yet.
On Saturday night I trekked up to the University to see the fabulous Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland (his fiancé, who was playing in his band this tour, not doing her own stuff unfortunately!) There were four bands that night; The Fembots played first (they were great) and Luke second. I was only interested in seeing Luke (who rocked!!) and not into having a late night, so I didn’t stay for the rest of the show and was downstairs trying to get a cab by 10:00. So, you know what’s hard? Trying to get a cab at 10:00 on the Saturday night before Halloween. Yeah. Not fun.
Ohhh yesterday before the chiropractor I used up part of a salon package I bought several months ago. One of those $400-worth-of-services-for-$50-deals to attract new clients. I am in desperate need of a hair cut and colour, but I couldn’t get in for that until later in the month. I was able to use the other part yesterday, and went in for a manicure, pedicure, facial and herbal foot and leg massage. The pedicure wasn’t part of the package but only $20 extra so I gladly paid it. I also paid a bit extra for paraffin wax on my hands because I LOVE that shit and while I’m being pampered, I may as well go all the way. Already my nails are looking grim though, all it takes is one visit to the pool. I was going to buy the nail colour for much-needed touch ups but decided I can probably find a close enough shade at the drug store for a lot cheaper. This weekend will include a much needed trip to the mall (I think it misses me anyway, it’s been… like…. DAYS).
Work is busy, my office floor is covered in receipts and papers to be filed and I have a few boxes of work from client’s to finish up. So things are good in that area right now. I’m working away from home less and trying to keep my health up there as the number one priority. I’ve fallen off track with my meditation, visualization and relaxation exercises, but I’ve been really good with my food, water and supplements (and now swimming for exercise!) I just can’t seem to get it together and EVERYTHING I need to do to complete the package.
Sigh.
Anyhoo… off to do some filing. Catch ya later!
Hi Donna! Your blog always make for such interesting reading. I always feel inspired after reading one of your posts.
There opened up a franchise called ANAT last month in our town, where they serve falafels and hummus and shwarmas. Love, love, LOVE them. Yum. I must have been an Arab in a previous life.
Tomorrow I am starting with my visualization/ affirmation exercises. I have been saying this for over a month, but this I really mean it. No, really, I do! But why is it so hard, lol?
I know… okay, well, if you are starting tomorrow, then I am getting BACK to it tomorrow! Scout’s honour.
THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE OLD DONNA! Welcome back, glad your feeling better, pampering the hell out of yourself and everything! I think I need to go to Joey’s only tomorrow since my kitchen is in boxes! yay!
