And Another Week Flies By

h1 Friday, September 23rd, 2005

Oh my, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it. I’m just going to make a random entry about what I’ve been up to.

My friend Shawna is visiting from Winnipeg. She is staying in a hotel this time and has rented a car, so she can totally do her own thing too. The night she arrived, Michelle and I met her at the airport and she gave us flowers when she got off the plane. I got SUNFLOWERS!! Sooo sweet. We went to Moxie’s for some food and then I was home by 11:00. Then I talked on the phone with a friend until 2:00 a.m. just to mess up my body clock. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello, Grandpa!

The last thing I feel like doing these days is updating my blog (soooo-o-o-o tired) but a couple interesting things have happened lately and I figure I better write about them before I forget, since this is, after all, more or less a record of my life!

On Thursday night I went to see Danny Michel. I have been a fan of Danny’s for a long time, but have missed his live shows in the past and usually heard about them after the fact because I wasn’t on his mailing list. Duh. Anyway, he was at the Liberty Lounge and I rounded up Michelle, Jay and his wife Katrina to meet me there. We were all, it’s fair to say, blown away. Danny took to the stage with just his guitar and no band to back him up. The whole show was like that, just a man and his guitar, his voice and a few gadgets to enhance his performance a bit. I loved it. He was amazing. I love the song “When I Get Out” 300 million times more than I did before, after hearing it live. I love everything about him even more after seeing him live. Goodbye New Orleans, Goodbye George Bush?

A couple days ago I spent some time on the internet looking at photos, videos and reading up on the devastation that is Hurricane Katrina. I haven’t watched much on TV but I have caught some. (How can you not?) It is all so overwhelming and devastating.

I have always wanted to visit New Orleans. In fact, it was one of my dream honeymoon destinations should I ever get married. To see Bourbon Street, take in all that live jazz and blues, and eat a lot of Southern food! That was on my mental “to do” list. I guess I have to scratch it off now. I find it hard to believe it’s all gone.

What I am most appalled about is how many days thousands of people went without food and water. How many babies were born over that time in that environment, and if any of them survived, not to mention the mothers giving birth without medical assistance; how many woman were raped; all the people that were just left to die. Mothers giving their babies to CNN reporters. They have nowhere to put the dead bodies, so they are left floating on the water or lined up in the street. The ones who have died in the Superdome are just being left there. Read the rest of this entry »
