Oh Canada
July 1st, 2005
I watched “Bye Bye Blues” on TV last night. That is one of my all-time favourite movies, or at least at the top of my Canadian made films. It was released in 1989 and I originally watched it for Michael Ontkean because I had a bit of a Twin Peaks-y crush on him. He is hardly in it though, and what ended up drawing me to it was the music. It’s about a woman (played by Rebecca Jenkins) who becomes the lead singer in a jazz/swing/blues big band in Northern Alberta in the 1940’s to support her family, when her husband goes off to war. I think that’s pretty much what I must have done in a previous life. I fell so in love with the music I promptly bought the soundtrack (on vinyl) and played it alllll the time, belting out the songs as if I were Daisy Cooper myself. All these years later that is still my favourite movie soundtrack, although I haven’t had a record player for many years and can’t listen to it anymore. SO YOU KNOW WHAT I DID? Several months ago I was missing those songs terribly, so I started searching for a CD… I even e-mailed the movie’s director, who told me that a few CDs were made years ago, but no longer available, and to keep an eye on Ebay for them. Pffft. I ended up posting a message about looking for it in a guestbook on a Rebecca Jenkins related website… she read it… and emailed me directly. She burned me two copies of her own CD and even colour printed the artwork for me, and mailed them!!! How cool is that?!?! So yeah, I am back to belting out “You Made Me Love You” and “Am I Blue” and the neighbours just love me. Seeing the movie again last night after probably 8 or 9 years just brought it all back. Michael Ontkean… whatever happened to him? I’m sure he’s still hot.
On Tuesday I worked, and was picked up at the end of the day by an Access Calgary driver that is well aware of my love for hommus, as he told me he makes his own the last time I saw him, to which I responded something along the lines of “ohhhh yumyumyumyum”. He actually stopped off at Byblos Bakery (a few blocks from my client) to buy me hommus before he picked me up, but they didn’t have any! He said he only got his schedule that morning… if he had known the day before he was going to see me, he would have made me some. He did say not to be too surprised if he shows up at my door with some one day. I don’t doubt him, he’s a sweetie!! And no, this is not another Access Calgary driver crush developing, he is married and a very good friend of AH’s.
Speaking of AH, he took me to see “Bewitched” on Wednesday at my urging. I guess we both would have been happier had I suggested “War of The Worlds” instead (which it appeared everyone else was seeing, our theatre had about 4 other people in it). Or maybe we should have gone to that mystery/fantasy one, “The Perfect Man“. (Ha. Haha.) Not that Bewitched was horrible or anything… it had its moments… but Will Ferrell is quirkier than this role allowed him to be, and him and the ice queen Nicole Kidman had zero chemistry. (Does anyone have chemistry with her?) I have my Best of Will Ferrell: Saturday Night Live DVD here to watch that will make up for it though. And any time I am sitting next to AH is a good thing in my books. I haven’t seen him since Shawna was here. (AH: “Has it been that long?!” Me: (thinking) hmphdamnyoudidn’tevennoticeyoupooheadwhydoievenbotherwhythehelldoyou havetobesohot. Hee. (He’s a sweetheart, really, my crush stands firm. No further explanation necessary at this time).
Yesterday I worked back up at that new client who needs me to teach her how to do the books for her dad’s business. I love going there. Kelly is an absolute sweetheart and we really get along… we probably spent an hour just yakking instead of working, and 4 hours into it she stopped and said “I’ll pay you for the full 5 hours, let’s get out of here and get some wings”. My kind of client!! She cut me a cheque on the spot for 5 hours at my full rate, then took me for wings and beer, her treat again. Loving her. So this is why I went into business for myself!
Those selfish hilarious bitches at Go Fug Yourself have gone on holidays for an entire week.
Things that are bugging me today: Hollywood couple nicknames. It started with Bennifer and now we’ve got Tomkat and Brangelina… ugh. Also, Michael Jackson is describing his verdict as a historic moment, and has compared it to events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the release from prison of Nelson Mandela. I can’t even begin to discuss how WRONG THAT IS on so many levels. What a freak.
So it’s Canada Day. I am not partaking in any of the festivities this afternoon or tonight as far as I know… life is very quiet these days and I kinda like it that way. It’s cheaper!! I’m getting up very early for a chiropractor appointment at 8:30 tomorrow morning, and then my mom is coming to spend the weekend with me. It’s been awhile since she’s come to stay overnight. We’ll probably do the whole dinner/movie thing which will be nice. I’m voting for Crash and Vietnamese… and I will win. Heh. You know, the first time I heard someone mention how good “Crash” is recently, I was thinking… are you kidding me, that disgusting, degrading, absurd David Cronenberg creepy sex-and-car-accidents movie that was out years ago?? Then I realized there is a new Crash out that is… very different.
Have a good one!
Poohead??? Very mature, Donna. LOL.
As for movies I’ve heard The Perfect Man is AWFUL so you didn’t miss anything there. And Crash is great, so tell your Mom I vote for that one too, even though I’m not there to see it.
LMAO Donna, that was one of the LONGEST phrases I have ever heard your write..? haha! And be careful of Michelle, she KNOWS where you live and was probably sitting outside your door listening to you girls watch that movie
haha I just can’t picture Nicole Kidman as being funny so I probably won’t watch that movie..thanks for the warning!
And be careful of Michelle, she KNOWS where you live and was probably sitting outside your door listening to you girls watch that movie
Are you calling me a stalker now?!?
