Sunday, Bloody Freezing Sunday
January 9th, 2005
Another cold Sunday morning in my flannel jammies clutching my hot cuppa tea. I managed to get warm and stay warm last night, playing with my thermostat, putting on warm PJ’s and socks and crawling under two big comforters… but now I am cold again. My thermostat is turned up all the way… I guess it’s time for another call in to building maintenance. I have to tidy my bedroom before I do it though because that’s where the main wires are they need to fiddle with. So that means I may put it off yet another day and just wear a sweater! Next week it is going to be a lot worse on Tuesday and Wednesday, so I better get it looked at tomorrow.
Last night I met up with Michelle and her friend Gemma at the Ironwood to see Sillan & Young. I have heard their album many times during my many hours of listening to The Kitchen Radio, and have fallen in love with them. I am so happy to have their CD myself now so I can obsessively listen to it over and over rather than waiting for my favourite songs to come on the radio station! They are led by the sultry, smokey, jazzy, sexy vocals of the beautiful Johanna Sillan… she is just spine-tingling! I first heard her sing on a track on Johnny Summer’s latest CD called “Miss the Girl/Miss The Boy” (you can listen to that track HERE, and I recommend you do!!). Then I saw her at Victoria’s Chophouse in the summer as a guest singer with the R&B band playing there that night. It was great to see her in a full show last night, singing mostly her own songs (that she co-writes with Aaron Young, who is an amazing guitar player too). When they did a cover, like “Summertime” or “True Colours”, they add so much of their own style to it and rearrange it in a way that it sounds like it’s their own song anyway.
The Ironwood was almost full, which was great to see on such a cold night. Johanna said that for their CD release party in November they went over capacity (the place fits about 145 people I think, and they brought in over 200) and had to turn away about 80 people at the door. It’s great to see that with a local band… and their song “So Long Marie” was featured on the TV show “Joan of Arcadia”. I hope they continue to do great things!
Their drummer, Rob, is also The Polyjesters‘ drummer, so I did know one member going in (I am quite certain there are no more than 4 degrees of separation between me and every musician in the country) so after the show I chatted with him a bit while trying to get through to a cab company on my cell phone. Busy, busy, busy. Finally I got through, but it probably cost me $5 before I talked to a dispatcher. We were right by the door, so the second I saw a cab pulling up I said goodnight to Rob and raced out there, just as three people were getting into it. I yelled out “is that cab for Donna? I called it!” They all stopped and stared at me with blank faces. The girl getting in the front seat looked at the driver and asked him, and he nodded. They looked back at me with their blank faces again as I was standing there, in the freezing cold, with a CANE for Chrissakes, saying “I’m Donna, that’s for me!”… even the DRIVER was looking right at me… but they closed the doors and took off anyway. I was LIVID, but whattaya do?? I spent another $5 trying to get through to the busy cab company again and told them their lovely driver took off with three other people while I was standing right there. He said “yeah, it says he picked you up”. Fucker. So they sent another one and it took a lot longer than the first one. Sigh… I can’t believe some people. How RUDE. I hope that driver and all three of those people experience a little karmic energy today. Horrible hangovers, burnt toast, stubbed toes, and their electricity going out in the middle of “Desperate Housewives” tonight would be a good start.
Last night I asked Michelle how it is she manages to get her butt out of bed at 5:30 every morning and head to the gym. (I mean, come on, there must be some secret all you work-out-aholics aren’t sharing!) She told me what I have heard many times before.. you make it a priority, just do it, and after awhile it becomes a habit, just something you do. No secrets. Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it??? Hmph.
Anyway, other than last night, life has been pretty quiet except for work. I did get some money from business plan guy, so that’s good. I’m almost finished that Plan, once he gets me the rest of the information about his management team. Then I’ve got another guy waiting in the wings most likely… he emailed me and said he would know soon if his car wash is going to be a “go” and then would need his business plan and financing within 60 days. I had given him a detailed template a few months ago, so I told him as long as he is on the ball with supplying ME with what I need in a timely manner, it will be done in time. We are already heading into the busiest time of the year for me (year ends, T4’s, GST, taxes) so it just may be within my grasp to be slightly out of debt this year after all!
Have a great Sunday, stay warm!
Donna-whatever you do, NEVER listen to Michelle and her positive talk about getting up in the morning to work out! haha (I know Michelle will be reading this-hee). She is a morning person-ewwwww. lol My dad is a morning person too-he wakes up naturally at 5:00 ish and goes to bed around 10:00 ish-I wonder how he does it, but for him it is just a normal thing to do-of course he works in the day so that is the main reason-but still…yech!
Glad you guys had fun last night at the IronWood!
Hey aren’t I gonna see Sillan & Young at La Tulipe? Isn’t that who it is? lol…oh…geez I still gotta get tickets for that!! Remind me! I’ll get them next weekend, when I’m at my dad’s…he knows how to do that kind of thing. I’m too shy.
(Hahahahaha)
Anywhoo I HAVE been reading your blogs, but something always happens after I write a comment that forces me to put it off or stop, or something…like my mom getting mad at me, or the computer freezing, stuff like that. But no! NOT today! ohhhh no!
Oh and by the way I’m home because I didn’t feel like going to school. So yeah. All I had to do was say, “Mummyyyy I don’t wannaaa go to schooool!” and she said, “Fine, it’s up to you.” And I thought about it for a while (long enough that I would miss my bus and be late anyway) and I said, “Well, I have no tests today or anything of extreme importance, so, good night!” And I went back to bed.
Anywhoo sorry for the novel…I’m gonna get back to moving my stuff!
oh by the way by the way i’ve been grounded ish because i spend too much time on the puter.
I can’t believe that cab driver and those 3 people! Boy some people in this world truly amaze me.
I am NOT a morning person, never have been never will be, I just accept that as a part of who I am and embrace it
